I am still reviewing and processing the images I shot this summer while in Maine and Nova Scotia. While reviewing the shots taken on Monhegan Island, I stopped a while on this image. This is the sort of scene that draws me in, allowing me to feel a part of what is happening in the community.
Monhegan Island is scarcely a mile squared. It sits approximately 10 miles off the coast of Maine and is accessible only by passenger ferry. Automobiles are not allowed on the island, unless, of course, you are a year round resident. Even then, at that size, one could easily walk from one point on the island to another, making cars extraneous. How wonderful!
Since the weather was cold and rainy, we were forced to look elsewhere, rather than relying on the quintessential seaside images, so sought after by the hordes of artisans who make their annual pilgramage to Monhegan. As we walked the island, there were lobster pots a plenty; sea gulls perched, as if posing, on roof tops; empty adirondack chairs turned toward the sunless sky, sanguine of a better day. But this old barn, with door ajar in a welcoming sort of way, and local postings nailed on its side, called to me and I shot several images.
There are the typical postings from local eateries, beckoning one to sample their wares; artisans scheduling hours to view their latest work; a notice on summer library hours and even helpful information from the island recycling facility on how to make surplus cardboard ready for pickup. Angelas' fresh bagels will be available at Carina on Saturday and Sunday. Superfluous to ask who Angela is, or where one would find Carinas. There is even what appears to be a camera case, presumably found on the street, attached and waiting for its rightful owner to claim it.
For me, this image imbues a relaxed, friendly way of living. I'd love to return to Monhegan, spend a little more time exploring this quiet island and looking for more photographic opportunities. I am certain I wouldn't be disappointed. If so, I'll be sure to plan my visit to coincide with one of Angelas fresh bagels at Carina.
